Bonnie Schneider
As a result of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) however, after experiencing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate for education that incorporates studies in the arts alongside study of other disciplines. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist that earned acquired an MA from 1967 and earned a Ph.D. in the field of ethnomusicology from UCLA. My ethnomusicology degree, which was started from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the music department at a College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have diverse passions. Also, I like looking at the bigger perspective. I love teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) for whom I have written three books - Music in India: A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods of primarily academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean for Undergraduate Advising in 1992-1998, and the Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
